Does anyone have any clearcut knowledge on the best way to go about this? I think a whole heap of would-be entrepreneurs are blocked in their efforts due to difficulty in understanding how to request funding from the government.
I know there are over 100 different grants available from both the UK government and the constituent national governments in Wales, Scotland and N.I.
This discussion is aimed at being a collaborative effort to provide quick info for startups looking in this area. Here is what I found quickly:

My first point of call is Business Link “Grants and Government Support”: http://bit.ly/Hl4tHC
You can jump straight to their Directory here to search by sector or location:

Hi All,
Callum I think you’re exactly right.
Thought i’d bump this discussion as it’s important one!
There are a ton of funding resources I’m aware of however some are limited by age and some by location.
Shell LiveAWARD awards
Virgin Media Pioneers
Business Gateway/ Business Link
Starter for 6 (Scotland)
Princes Trust (generally 18-25)
The Pitch UK
It would be great if anyone else could add on ones they know!
You can also get StartUp loans from StartUp Britain – they are low interest enterprise loans It’s a fantastic resource, up to £2,500 available if you have a viable business plan.
Unfortunately they are not available in Scotland, where I’m based – which is a real shame.
